Houses have a lot of places for countertops especially in a house whose owner is fond of cooking. The bigger the countertop, the better it was. It gives their utensils enough room to lie around without the need to move them in order to make room for others. This gives freedom of movement and allows any cook to use time efficiently.
The comfort room is another part of the house where the countertop can be installed, and though smaller, it is useful as a decoration and a place where females can put soon to be used makeup.
Both areas also require a countertop in order to cover the drawers and anything that are found underneath it. Sometimes, underneath the countertop can be very nasty.
That may have settled how important a countertop is, and the many parts of the house in which it can be installed. However, it did not mention how expensive it is especially when it is made out of concrete, but it may be the cheapest of all the materials available.
In case you do want a concrete countertop but do not have the funds to order one, then the best option that you have is to do it yourself. It might sound scary, and to others exciting, but it can be tedious. This article will guide you with how to make it.
The first step that you should do is to measure the cabinets from one corner to another and add 1 ½ inches in order to give way for the overlay. In addition, you might want to think about creating a table where you are going to mold the concrete countertop. You need to make sure that it will be able to support the weight of the countertop that you are going to mold.
In making the table, a ¾ inch plywood would be enough supported by a grid of 2 inches by 6 inches.
Melamine is used in the construction of the concrete countertop. You will be using your old countertop as an outline for the new one. When it is poured, you also need to make sure that the molding is kept sealed out from water so that it does not discolor. This can be reinforced with the help of silicon, but it may still discolor the cement and that is why you need to be very careful in applying it. Smooth it out first before you apply the silicon.
Remember to use 1 ¾ inch screws when connecting the slabs of cement that were molded. When smoothing the corners of the slab, you should only use Masonite strips or fiberglass.
Add all the creative features of the concrete countertop while the cement is still wet because you will not have the chance to add any of your plans once the cement is dry.
One obstacle that is common when molding concrete countertops was removing it from its outline. The cement hardening on the outline is possible, and it makes it difficult to remove. If you have the same problem, then, it is good to know that the best solution for this is to cover the mold with kerosene-based release oil dabbed from a rag or a sponge.
Moreover, you might also want to consider covering the holes made by the screw holes in order to avoid cement from filling up the holes. This is important so that you can easily remove the screws if ever you need to disassemble the slabs of cement countertops.
Countertops are difficult and tedious, but with the right materials and tips, you will be able to make the countertop that you always wanted.
